  • Google Goggles Visual Search Arriving Today on iPhones

iOS: Google Goggles, the formerly Android-only visual search app that's surprisingly good at recognizing books, art, beer labels, and other stuff all around you, is coming to camera-sporting iOS devices through an update to the Google Mobile app.

Goggles requires an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 to use, because of the autofocus camera requirement. Once you install or update the Google Mobile app (when it arrives—it's rolling out to English-language users gradually), you can do the same thing Android users have been doing for some time. Click the camera icon in Google Mobile, capture something you want to know more about, and give Google a shot at figuring out what it is you just shot. Goggles can be sometimes frustrating in what it can't seem to figure out, but also amazingly, spontaneously revelatory—it can translate foreign text in a picture, for example. Google provides a shortlist of things Goggles is better at catching.

Goggles is part of an update to the Google Mobile app for iPhone, which is free. Goggles requires the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 to operate. Tell us if you've already got the update, and what you think of Goggles' powers,
